Whether you are interested in a consultation or you are committed to improving your life, we are here to help. At OCCAPS we provide bilingual services for adults on a wide range of issues.

Fortunately, it is more commonly accepted that just like we visit a dentist for oral care, or a physician for medical help, there are innumerable benefits to seeing a psychologist.  To put the rate of mental distress in perspective, according to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 triggered a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety worldwide.  Over 8.5 million adults have experienced serious psychological distress in the last 30 days. Right now, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. is struggling emotionally. In the past year alone over 18% of adults have experienced high levels of anxiety that caused them distress.

Fortunately, seeking out treatment has been normalized by public figures, whom in recent years have opened up about the benefits of therapy, including their daily personal struggles, many of which sound only too familiar.  Scroll through social media and you might quickly find people openly talking about social pressure, depression, climate anxiety, loneliness, substance use, or the relief and hope found through therapy.  After all, change happens when goals are clarified and possibilities envisioned, which influence pathways. For example, if the goal is to avoid embarrassment, one might not take advantage of available opportunities; yet, if the goal is to learn, then we will welcome the growth that happens when we do something new; which is called an intelligent failure.

In addition to personal growth, it is possible that you have a need help with obtaining accommodations for an invisible disability or evidence for an immigration case.  As in the case of psychological assessments for diagnosis, disability accommodations, fitness of duty, and immigration (I-601A waivers, N648 waivers, u-visas, VAVA, and asylum cases).

When is it appropriate to seek therapy?

If preventative care is not possible, the next best option is to seek treatment early to prevent the type of chronicity detrimental to areas of importance, such as occupation or relationships, including our ability to feel comfortable in our bodies.  For instance, many adjustment issues manifesting as fear or gloomy mood can develop into conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder.

Although here is no complete list of boxes to check to tell if one should seek therapy, if you are reading this, it seems like you have already realized that you at least would benefit from it.
Here are a few signs that you may want to consider therapy:
  • If you feel sad, stressed, or depressed most of the time or experience panic attacks.
  • If you are having trouble coping or have experienced a loss or impactful experience, especially if you can’t stop thinking about it.
  • If your emotions are making you distressed, worried, or confused.
  • If you do not enjoy things you used to like or that made you happy.
  • If you feel that your emotions are holding you back or you “feel stuck” in life.
  • If you feel like you are not receiving enough support or can’t be honest with those you usually go to for support.
  • If you find yourself lashing out at loved ones or coworkers or that your relationships have grown strained.
Talk therapy is not like confiding in a friend, mentor, or loved one; effective therapy is based on empirical research.  At OCCAPS, our primary goal is the prevention, early detection, treatment, and development of skills to improve wellness.
  • Daily Well-being
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Self-Awareness
  • Reliance and Addiction
In addition to traditional therapeutic needs, there are also specific circumstances when a psychologist is needed. Such as psychological assessments for diagnosis, disability accommodations, fitness of duty, and immigration (I-601A waivers, N648 waivers, u-visas, VAWA, and asylum cases).

Do psychologist only see people with "severe" difficulties?

Picture
Absolutely not.  Psychologists are behavioral health doctors who specialize in promoting mental health through services that include standardized testing, rehabilitation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders, along with supportive services for those seeking to make the most from their opportunities. At OCCAPS, we equip our clients with the skills needed to build up their internal safe frameworks necessary for purposeful participation in life, and to respond productively.

Yet, too often, people feel discouraged from accessing support due to incorrect ideas about what therapy is.  If you are reading this, please reach out.  If your goal is improving your quality of life and well-being, we are here to help.  No concern is too big or too small.

Most of our clients have done quite well in many areas.  Yet, despite their accomplishments, some cannot savor their successes.  Some notice feeling restricted despite their acumen and achievements, whether in relationships, at work, or on an intrapersonal level.  Some of those emotional restrictions include worrying about abandonment, not feeling "good enough," feeling dissatisfied, or being "stuck."  While most of us might struggle with similar concerns periodically, difficulties that become the norm lead to distress and impairment.

Something else to remember is that even CEOs from major corporations and athletes seek professional help to achieve optimum performance.  Are you ready?  Allow yourself to experience a different way of being.
